New games for android

Veterans of the XCOM franchise will recognize the top-down, squad-based strategy gameplay in The Hunters. The popular iOS game has been faithfully ported to Android, complete with a sci-fi story and upgradeable units. The PC-inspired interface works best if you've got a tablet, of course, and there are in-app purchases, but they're neither necessary nor insistent.

Angry Birds Star Wars

Yes, yes, we know - it's abominable, a bastardized licensing cash-grab sacrificing a pop culture gem to a mobile gaming fad. But here's the surprising thing about Angry Birds Star Wars: it's actually a pretty cool addition to the franchise. The new themed powers are fun, as is the modified low-gravity physics engine, and the ability to remove ads from the free version with an in-app purchase is a nice touch. Those of you on tablets will almost need to buy the HD version, thanks to undersized UI elements. (By the way, if you love, and I mean love Star Wars puns, you can't miss Eric's review, above.)

Expendable Rearmed

When the humble G1 debuted, who'd have thought we'd be getting full 3D Dreamcast ports in a few short years? That's the case for Expendable Rearmed, a much-loved top-down shooter from the silver age of gaming in the late 90s. Expendable works on anything running Android 2.2 or later, but it's optimized for Tegra hardware. The concept is simple: there are a lot of aliens out there, and you've got to kill them all. So here's an apple and a gun. Don't talk to strangers. Shoot them.

Classic arcade action shooter, addictive gameplay brought up to date. Retrobomb proudly presents... The PC and DREAMCAST 1999 classic arcade shooter brought right up to date on your ANDROID Handheld device.  For the last 500 years, among the bleak and barren worlds that exist in deep space, mankind has expanded its horizons. The most suitable planets and moons near Earth have been terraformed, turning the once-inhospitable wastelands into habitable places. Deeper and deeper into the universe mankind spread itself, until only a mere handful of humans would or could survive the journey. These distant worlds became industrial powerhouses colonized by few human beings. Although they had to forego the comforts of home, they still managed to scratch out a living in the newly-fertile lands. For all he knew, man was alone in the vastness of space, until they came... The G'neng. You are given control of a clone army of Expendable units, dropped in one by one, rearmed to battle for the last human settlements which have been overrun by the G'neng, a malevolent bio-mechanical alien race.

Paper Monsters

2D platformers have enjoyed something of a renaissance in the last few years, many of them using spiffy 3D graphics to put a new shine on the genre. The latest and possibly spiffiest to hit Android is Paper Monsters, a charming side-scroller with old-school gameplay and boxes full of personality. Literally. The hero is a cardboard box on legs, fighting through a world of origami monsters. Xperia Play owners can use those delicious physical controls to play.

Ingress

Look, we're still trying to figure out what Ingress is. It's from Niantic Labs, a shadowy team inside Google, and has something to do with points of interest and landmarks. They emit energy, you collect it, and fight on one side of a global conspiracy. I'd tell you more, but the game is in invite-only beta at the moment. One of your dutiful Android Police editors got through the red velvet rope, so expect in-depth impressions soon.

*****Ingress is a closed-beta right now. Request an invite at http://www.ingress.com*****

Wreck-it Ralph by Disney

Wreck-It Ralph is awesome. If you've ever sat in front of a Genesis on Saturday morning or blown an allowance worth of quarters on Space Invaders, go see it now. Afterwards, feed your nostalgia with the official mobile game, which lets you play some of the fictional (well, not anymore, I guess) games from the movie. Fix-It Felix is based on Donkey Kong, Sweet Climber looks a lot like Ice Climbers, and Hero's Duty plays like a dual-stick shooter (similar to Age of Zombies).

This one fits squarely in the "Indie" category, with a simple platforming structure overlaying a surprisingly deep story. You'll need to master running, jumping, and xenobiotic horticulture (yup) to make it to the end.
